First Steps

When Death Occurs -  Following the death of a loved one you will have many questions. Here is a simple guide to support you along the way.

Individual- Inform family, friends, doctor, social services and carers.

Monetary- Inform banks, building societies, national insurance, life insurance, pension provider, credit cards and finance agreements,

Property- Inform the mortgage company or landlord. telephone, TV, internet, council tax and DVLA.

Assets- When someone dies leaving a will, the executor of the will becomes responsible for administering the assets of the deceased. The deceased individual, through his will, appoints one or more individuals to serve as executor. A solicitor will deal with the probate

Registration- The registration of the death is the formal record of the death. It's done by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

What is Required- You will need a death certificate to register the death. Before a death can be formally registered, a doctor will need to issue a medical certificate giving the cause of death. In hospital, this is usually done by a hospital doctor, who will hand the certificate to you in a sealed envelope addressed to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Documents for Burial/Cremation-

  • Medical certificate of the cause of death (signed by a doctor) for registering the death
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage/civil partnership certificates
  • NHS number/NHS medical card
  • Organ donor card
